Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS)
DSPS makes it tough to sleep and wake up on time. Reset your body clock and improve your sleep with our expert care.
What is Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome?
Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS) is when your body’s internal clock is out of sync. You may feel wide awake at night and find it hard to wake up in the morning. This makes it tough to follow a normal routine.
DSPS is not the same as insomnia. People with DSPS can sleep well once they fall asleep, but their sleep timing is off. At Somnium Sleep, we help you adjust your sleep schedule to match your daily life.
Types of Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome
DSPS can be divided into two types.
1. Circadian Aligned
Your body clock is consistent but delayed, which means you have a delayed circadian rhythm. You sleep and wake up late every day.
2. Circadian Misaligned
Your body clock is irregular, making your sleep schedule unpredictable.
Knowing your sleep disorder type helps in finding the right treatment.
What Causes Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome?
DSPS can happen due to different reasons. Here are five common causes.
- Genetics: If your family has sleep problems, you might be more likely to have DSPS.
- Hormones: Teenagers often get DSPS because of changes in their body during puberty.
- Lifestyle: Staying up late, using phones at night, or having an irregular schedule can mess up your sleep.
- Mental Health: Stress, anxiety, or depression can make DSPS worse.
- Environment: Not getting enough sunlight during the day can affect your sleep cycle

How is Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome Diagnosed?
To diagnose DSPS, doctors will ask about your sleep habits. You might need to keep a sleep diary or wear a device to track your sleep for a few weeks. This helps them see your sleep pattern.
Sometimes, a sleep study is done to check for other sleep problems. At Somnium Sleep, we use the latest tools to diagnose DSPS and create a plan just for you.
